Siadists, Sool and Burco conference

Siadists, Sool and Burco conference

I would like to thank Awdalnews for allowing a much-needed debate among Eastern Somalilanders of different political affiliations. It is a grim reminder of our dead-end political situation when this discussion cannot take place inside our local media since Sool regional websites, along with our Garaad, have simply become a mouth-piece for the Puntland leader of the day. In the case of our media, constant bullying and several arrests made them so servile that they are the only ones painstakingly reporting the most uneventful of Puntland cabinet gatherings.

Now coming back to the NSPU ramblings, Mohsin contends that "Abdalla Hirad and the director of NSPU are from SSC regions as are other members of the team. They also belong to Puntland since SSC is part of it. This link may have escaped Mohamed mind". Without spreading the beans on the among cited gentlemen tribal lineages, I can assure the author that I know firsthand (I spent almost two decades in small town Ottawa) that none of NSPU members sub clan falls within Somaliland borders. But therein, I believe, lies the disagreement between me and Mohsin: Puntland is a tribal entity and therefore believes that it encompasses each parcel inhabited by one of its sub clan. The majority of NSPU members hail from Bosaaso and the western part of Bari region, but having tribal lineage with some Somaliland sub clans does not give them the right to define their team as a grassroot Sool and Sanaag movement. By this process of pushing out boundaries as widely as possible, NSPU might as well pose as Ethiopian Somali advocacy group; but don't laugh this might happen since oil smell in Ogaden could well entice them irresistibly.

On the Burao conference matter, there has been a great deal written by Siadists and here is the basic charade going on in their mind: after Faqashia fall, the most respected elders from each Somaliland clans were peacefully convening when a horde of trigger-happy SNM militiamen forced them at gun point to declare Somaliland separation.
Of course, this ludicrous historical account have been time and again rebuked by direct testimony from participants, but the entanglement began with a couple of high powered Siadist household asserting it on every media, of course without producing one single evidence, fieldwork or witness. Throw enough mud, they say, and part of its should probably stick.
As you could expect from a faithful Siadist, Mohsin borrows from the same manta when he calls the Burao conference "hijacked by extremist SNM hotbeds" but he adds with rare candor that "the participants from SSC were disowned and the secession declaration rejected out of hand". Here is something I fail to understand: how can you disown someone based on decisions he was forced to make when he was held at gunpoint? Shouldn't you feel compassion and empathy for him instead? And why SSC elders did not denounce this plot when they were safely back in their homeland? Why did not they flee to Puntland and took to the airwaves?

As a Somalilander, I feel amazed to hear this loosely accurate folk story but as a Lascanooder, I feel insulted at the suggestion that my 9 Garaads and statemen like Qaybe, Galaydh, Afqudhac could have been held at gunpoint during Burao conference and kept silent about it. How can some fellow Lascanooders sell themselves short by attributing? How could they attribute to our elders such unflattering and baseless behaviors? Why do they promote these lies?No one could bully the late Garaad Abdi Qani to sign, at gunpoint, unwarranted deal subsequently get away with.

Despite all the huffing, duffing and rumblings, Mohsin self-serving window dressing diguised as political analysis can be tested out to naive foreigners but cannot convince a Lascanooders like me. Indeed, contrary to Mohsion contention that "SSC never joined the secession", the historical facts point otherwise: my region was fully represented with all its 9 Garaads, senior statemen like early SNM member Afqudhacac (Puntland current VP), Xaabsade, Galaydh, Qaybe... I understand that when you are trying to gain visibility one way is to shock people with outrageous claim, and NSPU is exactly doing this, but the circus has to stop.

Sool: Open Letter to Garaad Jaamac Garaad Cali Garaad Jaamac

Dear Graad,

It is a well-known fact that the region of Sool is the least developed part of Somaliland. While an intensive study would be worthwhile, among all the diverse causes explaining why the situation in Sool is more desperate than ever, the leadership of the region remains the elephant in the room.

In any event, as a native Las-Anooder that I am, you may be predisposed to hearing my lamentations on this matter.(Laas-Anood: the capitla of Sool region.) Like all Las-Anooders abroad, I was extremely thrilled by your crowning last year; who else could build much needed communication channel between the region and Somaliland, and at the same time get the Diaspora more involved in rebuilding of our region? Our region has been facing pressing issues and it takes a man with vision and great influence to bring about the changes we need.

However, immediately after your crowning my hopes were dashed to the ground because the fact Puntland authorities ruined your installation by playing a tug-of-war with Somaliland, and with the former ICU. You may hear some small-town politicians from Garowe bullying your host, but you won't hear the elders from Hargeisa talking or any political talks regarding your installation from Somaliland. But as unfortunate as it sounds: the Puntland that deemed the burial of our late Garaad as unworthy of their presence were adding insult to injury by shamefully politicizing this centuries-old traditional ceremony. Your response, dear Garaad, was to speak out against the total lack of ceremonialism which was completely appalling. Instead of notifying and summoning the Garowe schizophrenic dictator, you folded like a cheap bag. Moreover, a week later, you embarked on an embarrassing region tour with a no-name Puntland minister, and made yourself the receiving end of a cheap propaganda stunt.

Dear Garaad, this subservient attitude you have showed Puntland made our people hostages for ProSomaliweyn groups who often leave us in the dust when they reach their goals. A case in point would be Abdullahi Yussuf.

Granted, my dear Garaad, Sool is particularly hospitable to political intrigues and divided loyalties, since many residents are subscribed to different administrations. But you have the advantage of first hand knowledge, and the guiding principles of our former Garaad. Nothing else could have given outward testimony to the value of the late Garaad leader who in fact kept both Puntland and Somaliland political maneuvers at bay, while keeping communication bridges open. Unfortunately, there is a considerable doubt and much discussion as to whether you could hold this tenuous balance, and observe closely this strange power taboos that you have inherited from our former Garaad, without further isolating the region.

As history attests, our leaders have always been referred to as visionary who were beyond short-term political gains by their admirers. Without a doubt, there is plenty of evidence to support such assertion. And while your predecessor would have fought with considerable energy and determination to address Buhoodle and Cagaare crisis, you decided to visit endless towns in Europe (sometimes only an hour apart). Maybe instead of holding meetings with Somalia Diasporas, you should have mediated our warring tribes back home. You were needed the most in Buhoodle and in Cagaare, not in Birmingham and in Cardiff.

Your ten-month long visit abroad only entertained all disgruntled Siyadists languishing on Abdillahi Yusuf and waiting to be included in the list of future diplomatic postings.

Dear Garaad, as Somalis say, "Ninkii tiisa daryeela ayaa tukale ku dara". Our people must not worry about displaying huge Somali flags in community centers; instead they must address the never-ending problems facing our region.

I hope you take the lead.

With my utmost respect

Who is speaking on my behalf?

When my people are killed in jail and killers never found

When those killing my people are freed from jail and never found

When my blood is worth 10000 US

When my Garaads are lining up for the Islan tacsi and my VP is forbidden from attending my Garaad burial

When my Holl Holl mountains are sold off to Aussies and the proceeds are building Garowe Airport

When my men are rounded up to fight in Kismaayo and Yey nephews are attacking Lascanood suburbs

When Xaabsadde is sacked for saving my blood

When my NGO money is used up in Garowe and thankfully my teachers paid by Somaliland

When my Garaad is on a 10 month tour abroad and cannot find time for Buhoodle crisis

When Taleex is burning and Fuad is alone fighting

When arms are flocking from Qardho and my forces sleeping in Adhi Caddey

Is Awdalnews.com an Online Tabloid or a Reputable Website?

While one must respect awdalnews.com’s efforts to be fair to its contributors, one also wonders the purpose of posting tabloid articles that violate pillars of good journalism. These barely articles are not only written poorly, even a layman (like me) could point out their incoherence and inconsistence, but they also deliberately spew out a load after a load of venom towards Somaliland. Are the proofreaders of awdalnews.com dead? This is a mind-boggling exercise, to say the least.

A case in point: recently Aden Mohamed Tani published an article entitled, “Obituary of the brutal hunting of Rahanwayn refugees in the streets of Hargeisa”. In it, Mr. Tani claimed that after a group of local Hargaisa gangs chased 250 innocent Rahawayns through the streets of the city, the panic caused two people to be trampled to death. Does this make sense? Of course not! Since these people were not squeezed into a small area, they were chased in an open space; then there was no way that anyone would be trampled to death. What was even more bizarre than Mr. Tani’s accusation was: why 250 people could not defend themselves from a group of gangs? In his article, Mr. Tani shifted his topic sentence from defending the rights of Rahawayn to attacking the “secessionists’” agenda as he put it. Additionally, Mr. Tani accused the people of Hargaisa and Borame mistreating Rahawayne people. Clearly, his article not only missed its main objective—advocating for the rights of Rahawayn people—but also Mr. Tani shot himself in the foot when he attacked Somaliland people, under the pretext of defending Rahawayn rights.

Worse yet, Mr. Tani published another “article” entitled, “Sports and politics in the self declared Republic of Somaliland” on awdalnews.com. And again, he claimed some bizarre things that happened in Hargaisa, but this time for some odd reason, he was on the side of the people of Borame. In his earlier article, however, Borame was the same city that Mr. Tani accused its residents of mistreating the Rahanwayn people without credible shred of evidence. In his later article, he made fool out of himself when he fabricated yet another story that none of the Somaliland websites reported. As reported by Mr. Tani though, the Basketball team of Awdal region lost the trophy after the team failed to show up for the final game against Hargaisa’s team. And as alleged by Mr. Tani, Awdal’s team could not bear the insults such as Faqash(a derogatory term) that the Hargaisa’s fans hurled at the visiting team in earlier matches, and therefore the team decided not to compete anymore. These accusations are laughable. Why?

First, the provincial games of Somaliland have been played for the past 17 years, and the odd incident that Mr. Tani mentioned in his article was never reported before. So why Hargaisa fans would be so uncivilized all of a sudden remains bizarre. In addition, Hargaisa is not the capital of a tribal enclave as Mr. Tani portrayed it. It is rather a big city that is home to many not only Somalilanders, but also to Somalis. Furthermore, Hargaisa is home to thousands of Awdalites. Not to mention, there is a neighborhood called Isha Boorame. But isn’t it also a Somali tradition to welcome the visiting team rather than insulting them?

Of course, as part of the great Somali tradition, the visiting teams normally would stay with Hargaisa residences as a guest of honor during the games. During their stay, the visiting teams would tour around the city, and eat in some of the finest restaurants in the city with their host. The guest teams would also meet the extended families of their host, their friends, as well as their neighbors. So why the host would insult their guests defies common sense and logic. Second, none of the Somaliland websites or the media has reported this ugly incident that Mr. Tani dedicated to his article.

Without a doubt, Mr. Tani’s accusations—a hail of rubbish—were ludicrous. He even quoted himself and shared his palpable propaganda with us, "Can anyone imagine that a fanatic teacher asks your daughter in a Hargaisa School where she was born and she tells him that she was born in Mogadishu and he tells her from today on you should only say that you were born in Hargaisa?" No sir; but I couldn’t imagine either anyone quoting himself in his article. (And I didn’t know in Hargaisa babies are delivered in schools as opposed to in hospitals.) Why Mr. Tani quoted himself is beyond anyone’s guess. But this self-quoting does not bolster his story nor does it make his accusation more believable, does it?

Even, if we give Mr. Tani the benefit of the doubt and agree with his assertion that the ugly Faqash incident against the Basketball team from Awdal province really took place, how important was it to report such a thing, especially when thousands of Somalis died so far because of the brutal incursion into Somalis by Ethiopia-U.S unholy coalition? In addition, in sports name-callings and hurling insults at the opposing team are unfortunate but are not something new. Nor the hypothetical incident that supposedly happened in Hargaisa was exception to the rules.

In conclusion, clearly, Mr. Tani’s intention was neither to defend the rights of Rahanwayn people, nor to uphold the integrity of the Basketball team from Awdal region. In general, his attitude towards Somaliland speaks for itself, no need to read between the lines. However, undoubtedly, his “articles” make reputable website like awdalnews.com a playground for writer wannabes such as Mr. Tani. Also as it seems, Mr. Tani has his head up in his rear end, and any efforts to pull it out would pose an insurmountable challenge.

The facts that NSPU does not want you to know

The facts that NSPU does not want you to know

Along with number of Somalilanders, I have been deeply troubled by the recent report of Awdalnews on all the fake argumentation used by NSPU during their high energy anti Somaliland campaign. Of course, every Somalilander is free to favor Somaliweyn and every Somali has a right to lament that Somaliland people had chosen to restore their independence. Having said that, civil discourse, transpartent debate and intelligent argumentation ought to prevail, what approach NSPU is unwilling to grasp.
First of all, while ostensibly talking in the name of Sool, Sanaag and Cayn inhabitants, NSPU fails to disclose the fact that none of its members hails from these regions. As a matter of fact, along with longtime Somaliland critic Abdallah Hirad, NSPU director and all its agit-prop team are Puntlandlers without any relevant knowledge of Sool and Sanaag. Therefore, NSPU extensive report on the political mood in Sool and Sanaag are like supermarkets tabloids titles: over promising but short on content. As a matter of fact, none of the knee-jerk criticism of NSPU is supported by evidence or diligent interpretation. Instead, the authors chose to draw from the usual Siadist mythologies, often simply condensing the tired rhetoric coined by famous anti Somaliland propagandist. For example, what is the merit of claiming that elders were forced into voting for Somaliland independence when first hand witness overwhelmingly testify to the contrary. Prime minister Galaydh, a delegate during the conference, flatly rejected any coercision while doubting the merits of the separation. If concern for an accurate analysis was not minimal, NSPU would have learn that Eastern Sanaag delegates were the most adamant to vote for separation for a variety of reasons, mainly pertaining to the mayhem in Mudug region. They would have also learned that SNM leadership was way cooler towards separation that the masses on the street, just remember the famous blue print coined by Ahmed Siraanyo. To young and gullible audience, you could purge and politicize historical facts and present Eastern Somalilanders as adamantely opposed to separation, but I personnaly witness a conference in Badhan in 1991 during which 11 out of 23 delegates (including Jibriil Ali Salaad, Makhtir new leader) voted for secession, days before Burao conference. So much for the SNM coercing elders .
Another popular urban legend promoted by NSPU argues that Somaliland has never been recognized as a State during its 4 days stint as an independent country (26 June/01 July 1960). Nothing could be farther from the truth since a quick search through the UN archives indicate that almost three dozens states welcomed the new nation.

More importantly, besides these historical discrepancies, there are relevant facts that NSPU extremist do not want you to know. They can claim day in and day out that Sool and Sanaag are administratively an integral part of Puntland, but invariably points invariably otherwise. All Eastern Sanaag NGO are based in Hargeisa and while Lascanood health, sport and school infrastructure are supposed to be funded through Garowe, Somaliland proudly undertakes the training and remuneration of all Sool teachers. And when Sool players brilliantly make their way through Somaliland games, I am confident that, despite the problems and frictions my Somaliland includes Lascanood.

The true colors of the NSPU

If you have been following the news recently, you are well aware of the shadowy activities of a group called NSPU thanks in parts to the commendable effort of Awdalnews. Given the fact that the Ottawa group was by far the most vocal critic of Somaliland, I decided to pay them a visit. Briefly upon my arrival, I was stomached to learn that NONE of these activists hails from Somaliland. Do get me wrong, non Somalilanders are most welcome to critize my country (after all we are on Yey back day in and day out) , but please do not level false charges while speaking on my fellow Lascanooders names. For example, NSPU director, Gamal Hassan, is a Bosaaso native with no family linkage to Sanaag regions. And the majority of the board are Bari and Nugaal. How can you pretend to convey Sool and Sanaag feelings towards Somaliland and Somalia when your only experiences of Somaliland consist of shorts stopovers on your way to Puntland.
However a more prosaic explanation can be given to this in your face masquarade ; for years in Ottawa, low lifes, after spending a decade in university and facing up to the fact that there are no academic material, have been able to land big jobs in Uncle YeY government. No need to spin the beans, but look towards Yey advisors, would be ambassadors and Somalia UN staff to understand where I am coming from. NSPU is no different, there are simply sending signals to YeY, hope they are heard soon so they would live us, real Lascanooders, alone
